This incredible coat was made in the 1940s from grey wool. It was cut in the classic swing coat silhouette of the period with padded shoulders and a loose fit below. The tailoring on this piece is simply incredible with a sculpted shoulder yolk that extends to create wonderful zig zag seaming running down the bodice. The coat fastens with a single button at the high neckline and large patch pockets add a practical detail. But the real show stopper are the huge bishop sleeves which have been intricately decorated with embroidery and studding. Inside, the coat is lined in soft pink satin and has a maker’s label for Mary-Lane Coats And Suits. The is some slight shirring at the back waist, indicating it may once have had a matching belt but this could be easily replaced with a plain black belt for a fitted look.

The coat is in good condition, however there are a number of darns, small marks and pinholes as pictured as well as some slight wear to the lining. Some of the black paint on the studs is worn, revealing the brass colour below, which we rather like.
